German Style Wheat Beer

German Style Wheat Beer

This Hefeweizen will use wheat beer yeast, wheat, Pilsner malt, Munich and Caramalts along with Hallaterau hops to give an opaque golden beer with aromas of cloves and bananas. Dry and crisp and spicy on the palate.

Typical examples: Paulaner Hefe- Weissbier, Schneider Weisse, Franziskaner Weissbier

The original German purity law forbade the use of wheat in beer and for many lovers of German beer that simplicity is still important. However for me, it is the beers that break the rules that are often the most interesting and the German beer world is full of them.

German wheat beers manage to smell of cloves, bananas and pear drops without using anything other than wheat, barley, water, hops and yeast.

Having been brought up to expect beer to be served absolutely clear it was a revelation to see my first cloudy wheat beer. Now, rather than checking to make sure that gravity is doing it’s job in making the beer bright, I’ll be checking to make sure its doesn’t work too quickly.

Adnams Old Ale 4.1% abv available now

Adnams Old Ale now available

Adnams Old Ale now available

Available in selected pubs from now until approximately the end of January.

This is a mild ale style beer brewed with East Anglian pale ale and Crystal malted barley and Boadicea hops, dark red brown in colour with an aroma of caramel and nutty chocolate.

The toffee and chocolate also come through on the palette along with hints of red fruits, all balanced by a smooth bitterness.

A traditional speciality winter warmer. An old recipe dating back to 1890. Flavour of fruit, malt and roast grain, with a hint of caramel.

Adnams Old Ale is a rare treat.

An old Tally Ho bottle

An old Tally Ho bottle

After a bottling break of around 10 years, we’re bottling our winter beer Tally Ho. We’re brewing it now so that it’s available in bottle in December. Here’s my tasting notes:

“Tally Ho is a limited edition Barley wine style beer, brewed at Adnams since 1880. It is a dark Mahogany red in colour with a rich, fruity aroma and a heart-warming sweet raisin and biscuit palate. Brewed and bottled once a year, each year’s vintage will be unique and can be laid down like a fine wine. This beer will have natural sediment, as it is bottle conditioned.”

Keep an eye on the blog for further details later in the month. It should be available in our stores and in selected outlets by December.
