Tasting notes

Brewed with Pale Ale malt and First Gold hops, Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit.

What’s the story?

Brewed to commemorate the fierce Battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, it has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame. Adnams Broadside is a fine heart-warming English beer, rich in flavours of malt and hops and enjoying a special place in our hearts.

At 6.3% abv, bottled Broadside ‘Strong Original’ is our best selling bottled beer. Dark ruby red, rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit, it is a beer to savour.

The beer in cask is a different recipe to the bottle version and is the original Broadside, as it says on the bottle, which we started brewing in 1972.

During the early eighties the bottle market in the UK was in decline but cask beer was seeing resurgence.  Everyone liked the beer and the name and wanted to keep it going in some form but at 6.3% abv it wasn’t suitable as a cask beer. So we formulated a new recipe and called it Broadside.

Obviously the bottle beer market recovered and has grown strongly, at the same time the cask market grew and we have ended up with two successful beers with the same name but with different recipes. They do have similar tastes, both malty and fruity cake flavours, but bottled Broadside has them in abundance.

Bottled Broadside has won numerous awards over the years including a Gold medal at the 2009 International Beer Challenge.
(3.2 units per bottle)

Weighing less than 300g, our new, award-winning 500ml bottles are one of the lightest in the bottled beer category. Better still, they’re 100% recyclable.

Adnams Broadside is available in bottles to buy online.

    Krister,

At the moment we had not planned to list Gunhill in Systembologet but have chosen to present Innovation and Tally Ho due to their profile and abv. However, we will pass on the request to Spendrups.

    Regards
    Sean
