Kölsh German Style Beer

Kölsh German Style Beer

Brewed with a German top fermenting yeast, Munich and Pilsner malts and hopped with Spalt hops. This beer is fermented at a high temperature and then lagered to allow the beer to mellow and condition.

Typical examples: Küppers, Reissdorf

What I really love about German beer is the culture that surrounds it and that is particularly true of Kölsch in Cologne.

Everyone seems to drink Kölsch in Cologne regardless of status or gender. It crosses the divide between ale and lager and keeps the best elements of both.

Karl Marx once said that the revolution wouldn’t work in Cologne because the bosses drink with their workers.

I don’t know if a beer style can shape a regions culture or if the culture shapes the beer they drink, but I like to think it’s a bit of both.

  4. [...] we got down to business, asked: “How are you, guys?”. Very civilised. They were selling Adnam’s attempt at a Koelsch and, conveniently, an example of the real thing (Kueppers) for comparison. The Adnam’s was [...]

I stumbled upon the Kolsch in a station bar, outside my usual territory – I hadn’t seen the promotion – and I was knocked out by the taste. I have been hunting for it ever since. Can you oblige me with a current source?

  8. Jamie says:

Didn’t get around to trying this as wasn’t aware of the promotion but my wife did and she really enjoyed it. So much so she was raving about it to me for the rest of the night!!

  9. Fergus says:

Glad you enjoyed the Kolsch style beer. We’ve had some really nice comments back.
Let us know what you think of the Abbey style.

When i read that Adnams was brewing a cask german Kolsch,
I feared that it would taste like other all the other cask lagers about.
But to my suprise it certainly did not.
    A grape/peach aroma,followed by pleasant malt flavours,
And more grape/peach with a hint of spice leading to a subtle dry bitter finish.
A solid well made drinkable cask lager.
Well done Adnams i look forward to November and the Abbey Ale.
